Jean Prouvé apprenticed as a black smith before opening his own workshop/studio where these designs were produced. Most of his designs show his amazing intuition for the material properties of wood and metal. Practical efficiency and accessibility without compromising aesthetics was of primary interest in his work. These are values also shared by Eames, McCobb and Frankl, some of his mid-century American contemporaries. He collaborated with architects and other designers throughout his prolific career and the results are even more impressive a generation later .

If you are going to commit yourself to any task for a while, you'll need discipline, passion, desire and a sense of humor to keep you going. Not necessarily in that order. The cartoonist, sculptor, author and engineer Rube Goldberg had all those qualities. In 1931 the Merriam-Webster dictionary adopted the word "Rube Goldberg" as an adjective defined as accomplishing something simple through complex means.
